Do vacations on luxury cruises enhance romance?

Monday, February 13, 2012 by Dan Ilves
royal caribbean cruise vacationsJust in time for Valentine's Day... according to a survey conducted by Royal Caribbean, they do. However, as interesting as the survey results may be for some, this is not new information. The survey has been done previously, years ago, and the general findings were the same. Of course, that only underscores there's some truth to the matter, don't you think?  Let us know if you agree.

We've always preached the health benefits of taking vacations. This, too, has been documented by research.  Sometimes a good vacation is the only therapy some of us need to recharge our batteries and feel better about life, ourselves, and, dare I say, our loved ones. And there seems to be something about luxury cruises that enhances the benefits, as least where romance is concerned. Why do you think that is?

If a Royal Caribbean cruise vacation is in your plans, by the way, our cruise agency is offering a Royal Caribbean onboard coupon book with a value of up to $400.

New Year's Eve aboard the Sapphire Princess

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 by Mindy Crenshaw

New Year's Eve aboard the Sapphire PrincessA recent opportunity presented itself to sail with Princess Cruises on the beautiful Sapphire Princess to Mexico over New Year's! The vibrant and colorful atmosphere of Mexico, with its unforgettable combination of culture, history, and natural beauty, set the stage for a fantastic week at sea.

New Year's Eve aboard a cruise ship along with three relaxing sea days guaranteed us a chance to sit back, unwind, and discover all that the Sapphire Princess had to offer. With a perfect balance of port days and cruising the open sea, this sailing offered us a unique opportunity to Ring in 2012, rejuvenate, and return home refreshed.

The atmosphere onboard was buzzing with preparations for the exciting events, along with several of us scurrying around the ship trying to find all the items for the Treasure Hunt, and a chance to win $1000 at the Sail Away Deck Party.

New Year’s Eve was exciting with Champagne flowing, the festive party atmosphere, bands, DJ’s, dancing, and balloon’s falling from the ceiling…..we rang in 2012 with Cheers and Celebration!

New Year’s Day was our first full day of sea with an abundance of activities, and we filled the day with watching College Football Games in the Sports Bar, trivia games, an Enrichment Lecture on whales in Baja, wine tasting, the spa, and pure relaxation.

During the week we chose opportunities to leave our comfort zone and try something new and different. We participated in a 5K Fight against Cancer Deck Walk, a Champagne Art Auction, Karaoke, and some wonderful meals and different cuisine that we may not have tried otherwise.

The snapshots in our minds that will stay with us forever are the ones that had the most meaning; watching dolphins race alongside the ship while we sipped hot tea and enjoyed finger sandwiches, walking the deck and inhaling the fresh open air, toasting our glasses as we sailed past the beautiful El Arco in Cabo San Lucas as the sun set over Lover’s Beach, and having a balloon fight with our other cruise passengers in the Theater while dancing to YMCA. Needless to say, when it comes to cruises for families, a Princess cruise is a great choice for everyone and every lifestyle. I'd enjoy sharing more of my experiences with you and helping you plan your perfect cruise vacation.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 gets a makeover

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 by Dan Ilves
cunard line's QM2 welcomes usHave you taken a Transatlantic cruise? There are many to choose from. Ever since the launch in 2004 of the QM2 (Queen Mary 2), cruise travelers have had a fabulous luxury cruise ship worth crossing the Atlantic on.  Certainly her predecessor, QE2, was grand in her day, but the liner was looking tired and QM2 offers so many more bells and whistles.

Transatlantic cruises have always been one of those iconic voyages. Prior to the jet age, it was the only way to get from here to there. Today, Cunard Line's Transatlantic cruise is a 5-day voyage that's too short to fully enjoy one of the best cruise ships.

I always knew I'd make "the crossing," perhaps in my senior years. A cruise with no ports of call just didn't seem all that compelling to me as yet. However, I was lucky to have the opportunity, far sooner than I imagined, to experience this elegant lady of the seas. Truth be told, I was never bored, and the experience left me begging for at least one or two more days at sea to better enjoy so many options onboard.

From the Canyon Ranch Spa, the observatory programs, the Oxford lectures, the largest library afloat, the formal afternoon teas and Veuve Cliquot Campagne Bar and Golden Lion Pub, this was nearly heaven on the seas. And when it comes to cruises for families, there's plenty for kids to do, too.  In fact, they won't get enough of the Play Zone, and with all the quality time available to spend together, this might well be the best family cruise for those that relish togetherness. The very fine dining each evening in Princess Grill was a culinary delight each evening.

The best news is the QM2 has just been updated, and looks near brand-spanking new. So if you've every fancied sailing across the Atlantic on a Cunard luxury cruise ship, now's the best time to do so.

There's never been a better time to enjoy luxury cruises

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Dan Ilves
aboard silversea cruises, you're in store for an elegant dining experience. With so many new and refurbuished luxury cruise ships, today's traveler has many choices and can afford to be picky. The newest cruise ships offer larger and more comfortable staterooms with the latest amenities, the best in onboard cuisine and alternative dining choices, onboard activities that provide personal enrichment, and longer stays at ports of call to better enjoy them.

Many luxury cruise lines also offer one-week itineraries, unheard of a decade ago, which permit time-starved younger travelers to sample the best cruise ships.

Luxury cruise travelers are also drawn to smaller, yacht-like ships, of which we've seen several slip into the water. However, while these may offer a more personal and exclusive experience, not all ships that are small are the most luxurious, or offer the range of amenities the most discerning traveler requires. It is important to choose wisely, and know the benefits and limitations of each ship.

Crystal Cruises, with the largest of the top rated luxury cruise ships, offers more space per passenger than many of the smaller luxury cruise ships. The line just spent $60 million refurbishing its two ships, keeping the line on top of the luxury game. Beginning this spring, the line's pricing is inclusive of onboard beverages and gratuities.

With the launch of its two newest ships, Seabourn Cruises has recaptured its position at the top of the luxury scale, and in a price competitive marketplace, offers some incredibly well-priced deals. Silversea Cruises, with its mid-size country-club like luxury vessels, has also been refurbishing its fleet, as has Regent Cruise Lines, the only fully all-inclusive luxury cruise line.

Under new ownership, Windstar Cruises is updating its fleet over the next year.  And when it comes to cruising paradise, Paul Gauguin Cruises offer the perfect one-week cruises, or longer, from Tahiti.

When it comes to luxury cruises, there's never been a better time to enjoy the best cruise ships at the best possible deals. Better still, there are even more choices available to the discerning traveler than the cruise lines above, including river cruises, not to mention our exclusive amenities on many voyages!  Of course, we're here to help you navigate these myriad choices. In the meantime, perhaps you'll share what your favorite luxury cruise ships are.

Double the fun on back-to-back cruises

Friday, January 13, 2012 by Dan Ilves
royal caribbean's oasis of the seas is one of the newer luxury cruise shipsOne of the trends our cruise agency is seeing is an increasing number of people taking longer cruise vacations, those longer than the typical seven days.  It makes sense to do so for those that have the time.

After all, one week is barely enough time to relax and get cozy with your new surroundings onboard.  By the fourth or fifth day the novelty of being on a new luxury cruise ship has subsided, and one starts to really settle down to enjoying the experience.  And then it's all over!

My ideal cruise itinerary is at least 10 days (which can still be done with one week wedged between two weekends). However, longer itineraries are even more enticing. From a budget standpoint, the longer the cruise the less the cruise vacation will cost on a per-day basis. (You're also amortizing the cost of airfare and travel expenses over more days.)

On many of the top rated cruise lines, you can combine back-to-back cruises to create a longer itinerary, and not repeat any ports of call. Cruise lines usually offer a discount when you book back-to-back departures.  However, it's important to keep in mind that entertainment and special guests onboard may repeat, as might menu choices, though that's not always the case and often not important to many that book back-to-back cruises.

Another choice may be to book on two different cruise ships. One of the more exciting options here would be to cruise on the two largest cruise ships at sea: Royal Caribbean Cruises' Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. Presently, both ships cruise roundtrip from Port Everglades. Oasis departs on Saturdays, while Allure departs on Sundays. One could readily combined one week on each ship, with a one-night hotel package in between.

These two ships are so large and offer so many experiences, it's impossible to enjoy them all in the course of a one-week cruise on either ship. (That's quite a change from cruise ships decades past, which offered few entertainment and dining options.) While these ships are near twins, each offers different shows and restaurants, providing the cruise traveler unique experiences.

So if you're ready to double your cruise fun, check with our cruise experts on the options. If you've taken back-to-back cruises, perhaps you'll share your insights.

Cruise Reviews: Disney Cruise Line

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 by Tracy Brazil

Welcome onboard Disney cruise lineDisney Cruise Line is one of the best family cruise vacations. They offer something for everyone, from a themed pirate night to a Disney character's breakfast. The Disney Wonder is just like Disneyland, expect without the rides. From the decorations in the staterooms to the hand railings on the staircases, Mickey was everywhere.

Disney Cruises has many different cuisine venues onboard from which to choose. By the pool area there's Goofy’s Galley & Pluto’s Dog House Snack Bar, serving up hot & cold sandwiches, fresh fruit, salads and favorite BBQ foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts, and bratwursts. Overall, my best dining experiences

were in the three main dining rooms. The food, dining staff and atmosphere is incredible. And even more clever for a luxury cruise ship, guests alternate dining rooms every night. Each evening provided a different dining ambiance, though your waiters move with you to each dining room. This was the most memorable dining experience I have ever had on board a cruise ship.

As one might expect, Disney Cruises offers a wonderful children's and teen's program onboard, including computer labs, sports deck area, arcade, play area with slides and teen disco. In addition you have an inside and outdoor movie theater showing the latest Disney Movies for adults, teens and children. There are also two kids pools and one with a Mickey waterslide too.

Disney characters are about on Disney cruises

Of course, providing the best family cruise means looking after the adults, too. Disney Cruise Line ships have adult-only areas, such as Route 66, which includes a lounge, sports bar and disco. There is no casino onboard, but throughout your cruise bingo is available with cash prizes. Finally, there's an adults-only restaurant called Polo’s (an additional cover charge applies).

pool slide area onboard disney cruise lineOne can't think about a Disney vacation without entertainment. The wonderful Broadway musical shows onboard were memorable. From the Golden Mickey’s to Toy Story, the musicals were dazzling, entertaining and exciting, and something the whole family can enjoy.

My overall experience onboard this luxury cruise ship was magnificent, and unlike any other cruise ship experience. If you love Disney, and if your children love Disney, then these are cruises for families you won't want to miss out on, particularly with a Disney ship on the west coast!

Cruise report on Crystal Symphony

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 by Pam Jacobs

Crystal cruises butlerWhat a lovely ship Crystal Symphony is! We boarded in Los Angeles and took off to what would be an amazing voyage, full of new friends, music and laughter!

The Crystal Symphony is a bit smaller than the Crystal Serenity, and just as lovely. The ships are laid out similarly, so any Crystal Society [repeat] guest would be right at home on either vessel. I found the Symphony intimate and warm. The service was impeccable, of course. This is what we expect from top rated cruise lines like Crystal Cruises.

Since we were headed to Mexico (where I've been many times), I decided to take advantage of the ship and spent a lot of my time onboard. We took some dance lessons, and for the first time, I experienced the Gentlemen hosts onboard. They really do have it dialed in: if ladies are traveling alone they will ask them to dance, take you for a spin, and then they move onto the next lady. They are lovely gentlemen who are decent dancers and really make a lady feel nice to be asked to dance while traveling solo. Single ladies… pack your bags!

Onboard this cruise the theme was jazz... excellent! There were a number of additional musicians, and a lot of music lovers onboard. We were seated in the dining room with one of the guest lecturers, Will Friedwald, an expert on the Great American Songbook. He's written books on Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet. He was fun and we are staying in touch for the future.  We had other table mates that we just fell in love with, and plan on keeping them around for a long time. There were a handful of us who were the same age on this cruise, we all were drawn to each other and we became our very own little Rat Pack! Meeting new friends is still my favorite thing about cruising!

So our Rat Pack ruled the ship, singing Karaoke, dancing, listening to music, soaking in the hot tub, watching spectacular sunsets, sitting in the sun by the pool and eating in the fabulous specialty restaurants. We had such a great time I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

We went into Puerto Vallarta and there was a cool jazz jam in a lovely club called the River Cafe, a lot of folks from the ship were there as well as the musicians. What a swinging afternoon! The music onboard ship was fabulous and I was lucky enough to play about 5 or 6 times with different musicians (I'm a drummer): Jazz jam sessions in the Avenue Saloon, rock and roll up by the pool with the house band, and, oh yes, we rocked!

The last night was very sad, we had such fun together we never wanted it to end. I say let’s do it again I have always said there is something magical under the Crystal Cruise Seahorses. This trip was no different, a  truly magical time!  you can read more about Crystal Cruises and some of the exclusive offers from our cruise travel agency.

Crystal Cruises: Among the best of luxury Mediterranean cruises

Saturday, January 7, 2012 by Carrie Brown
Crystal Cruises is a top luxury cruise lineI did not think Crystal Cruises could get any better! This was my sixth cruise with Crystal, and the new refurbishments on Crystal Serenity were incredible. The beds in the staterooms were amazing and so comfortable. The entertainment and food was excellent. It is the epitomy of the best luxury cruise ship.

As has always been the case, the crew is incredible for always going that extra step. It's the attitude onboard that's puts Crystal on top of luxury cruise lines, and it's something you can't understand until you cruise with them. I sailed from Barcelona to Athens which was one of my dream itineraries. I enjoyed the ports of Monte Carlo (an overnight), Florence, Rome, Sorrento (which was a favorite of mine) Kusadasi, Mykonos, and ending up in Athens. After 27 years of booking a hotel with a Parthenon view for all my clients that stay in Athens, I finally got to experience it firsthand. So worth it! It was breathtaking to view the Acropolis lit up at night from my window. This was spectacular, and it's an itinerary I plan to repeat again!  Read more about Crystal Cruises.

Mediterranean & Greek Isles cruise with Celebrity Cruises

Tuesday, December 27, 2011 by lorie mcconihay

celebrity solstice in kusadasiI recently returned from taking my first cruise since the early 80’s and only the second cruise I’ve EVER taken! Now I know what everyone is talking about. Cruising has come a long way….

I sailed on one of the top Mediterranean cruise ships, Celebrity Cruises, for 12 nights, roundtrip from Barcelona visiting Rome, Naples, Athens, Mykonos, Kusadasi (Ephesus), Santorini and Malta. What a way to see a diverse mix of Europe. I had only visited Rome previously, so most of the ports of call were new to me.

As for the cruise line itself, Celebrity was fabulous! I had a semi-obstructed oceanview veranda stateroom on the Celebrity Solstice, which has to be one of the best cruise ships. The obstruction was minimal and it was wonderful looking out at the ocean from my huge bed. My room was very comfy and had a couch, flat screen TV and a nice size bathroom. The staff treated me like I was a “celebrity”. It felt like they knew me wherever I was, dining, spa etc… (I do tend to leave an impression!) My friends had made me a bit nervous about all the food ancreme broulee souffle at the murano restaurantd the possibility for weight gain on a cruise but that was not the case. The cuisine in the main dining room was delicious. Here the staff learned my preferences. They knew I love sangria and would make it for me nightly (or as requested). An extra cost but well worth it! I did opt to dine in three of the ship's specialty restaurants: Bistro on 5, Tuscan Grill and Murano – each was delicious. I think the place one could over-indulge would be at the buffets. The breakfast spread was massive but who has time to eat when you’re in a new port and places to go and people to meet.

At the Aqua Spa I had my first hot stone massage and now I know what everyone is talking about – OMG! I also enjoyed a seaweed wrap/massage and due to a sciatica problem and some leg pain I had an acupuncture treatment. The treatment was a bit pricey, but when you’re in pain and on the trip of a lifetime, who wants to stay in bed in agony. Luckily, I purchased travel insurance which covered this treatment plus the visit to the doctor. Apparently, the story goes the owner of Celebrity Cruises had sciatic pain while on a trip and had to stop to see an acupuncturist while in port. He got so much relief that now Celebrity has staff acupuncturists on their ships. Yay for me!

oios, santoriniI enjoyed all the ports I visited and tried a variety of touring options, from on my own (with friends), train, car rental, private tour and a ship’s shore excursion. For me personally, I preferred the on own or private tour options. I like to explore in smaller groups. But I will say if one opts for a shore excursion, they are very easy to book while onboard and conveniently added to your tab at the end of the cruise.

Of all the ports, I must make special mention of Santorini. You must make your way to Oios. I have never felt such a warm inner peace as standing in this picture postcard perfect town and looking out onto the ocean as I did here. This is a gorgeous location for honeymooners or a destination wedding.

Russia river cruise reviews: St. Petersburg

Friday, December 23, 2011 by Pam Jacobs

pam in st. petersburg during her russian river cruiseOur final destination on our Russian river cruise was St Petersburg. We arrived  in the evening and were greeted by fireworks! We had a great deck party. (It was cold outside, but we didn’t care -- we had a great time).

We began the next day with the tour of the Hermitage Museum. We entered two hours before they opened, so we had the place to ourselves for a while. The collection here is amazing, and most of it isn't even on public view. We saw Da Vincis, Monets, Renoirs, Rembrandts, Paul Gauguins, Matisses etc… too long a list to go thru... They say it would take a person 11 years to see each piece housed in the Hermitage. There are 100 rooms in this former palace, all filled with art. Afterwards, we proceeded to the Peter & Paul Fortress. Peter the Great is buried here, as well as the last of the Romanov dynasty. The church there is outstanding.

We spent our evening in the Hermitage Theatre of the Winter Palace, where we saw Swan Lake. When in Russia one must see a ballet!

Next day we went to Pushkin to see Catherine’s Palace (or the summer palace). Built for Peter the Great and expanded by his daughter, Elizabeth, it is an amazing example of Russian baroque architecture. It was burned to the ground during the seige of St Petersburg, but the restoration is the finest in the world. The ever controversial amber room has been recreated and is so gorgeous! The palace is stunning and a must-see!pam at catherine's palace

Off to Nevsky Prospekt in the city, for a little shopping and lunch. With some free time the next day, we visited the Russian Museum, where you can follow the history of Russian art, and enjoyed some shopping before heading back to the ship.

On Russian river cruise ships, one enjoys fascinating lectures. Some of the topics on our cruise included The Romanov’s, Russian history, the Lenin & Stalin years, Gorbachov, Siberia, Yeltsin, Putin and the Democracy, and what to look for in sourvenirs. The sightseeing included on our river cruise was all the more enriching given when put in context the onboard lectures provided.

Our Russian river cruise really was one of my favorite vacations, and was one of the more exotic cruises I've experienced. For those that haven't been, Russia is a very different and enriching destination. Being entrenched into a new and very different culture will bring out a yearn to learn more, and a true feeling of accomplishment. I would highly recommend a River Cruise in Russia; it truly is a very special trip!

Russian river cruise reviews: Beyond Moscow

Thursday, December 22, 2011 by Pam Jacobs

russia's stunning onion domesFollowing Moscow, the next stop on our Russian river cruise was Uglich, a small town on the Volga River. We enjoyed a lovely walking tour. This is a quaint small town dating back to 1148. This is where Ivan the Terrible’s son Dmitri was killed. He was found on the river banks, and there stands a beautiful church in his honor, called Church of St Dmitri on the Blood.  Nearby is the Cathedral of Our Saviors Transfiguration. Both churches boast the beautiful onion domes that Russian churches are famous for. This is such a cute little city, and there are vendors set up selling traditional Russian souvenirs. So you can purchase the nesting dolls, Soviet memorabilia & wool scarves at reasonable prices.

Our river cruise in Russia continued to Yaroslavl, where we had a tour of the town. Prince Yaroslavl founded this town in the 11th century, on the site where he killed a bear, the city's symbol. We had a great time in an open market and did some shopping. The thing to buy in Yaroslavl is the hand painted Russian lacquer boxes. They are expensive; however they are lovely and are collectible items. The town itself was charming.Pam holding hand painted russian lacquer boxes

We next cruised to Goritzy.  We toured the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, founded in 1397. There is a folklore about the lake it overlooks. They say if you wash in it you will be 10 years younger. (Of course, I jumped in!  hee hee.) Goritzy is also a great place to purchase fur, for those so inclined.

Onward to Kizhi. Kizhi is the smallest little town that only has a year around population of 50 people. An open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kizhi is one of the most ancient inhabited sites in Russia., and the sight of the oldest church in Russia. But the key sight here is the Church of the Transfiguration, built completely of wood without a single nail! It has 22 timbered onion domes. It's amazing, and you just can’t take your eyes off of it!

Russian river cruises: Moscow

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Pam Jacobs

Pam Jacobs in front of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow during her Russian river cruisePart 1. I had the best experience on a Russian river cruise. Not only did we see amazing places, such as Red Square, The Hermitage Museum, Catherine’s Palace, the Moscow Metro and the Armory, but we were entrenched in Russian culture. We were treated to very knowledgeable guides, amazing lectures, Russian lessons and, lest we forget, vodka tasting.  River cruises are a delightful way to experience Russia. A few of the best river cruise lines, like Uniworld and AMA Waterways, have introduced several new river cruise ships in Russia within the last year.

Our first day of our river cruise, we were divided into 4 managable groups of about 28 people. We drove into Moscow where we toured the city, including the underground metro (a work of art in itself). Each metro station is decorated differently and all are fabulous! Any one could be a museum on its own. They are all huge, elegant stations with a variety of art & sculpture. Moscow's system transports 9,000,000 people per day! It's the most beautiful metro I have had the pleasure to explore.

We visited the Arbat district, where famed Russian poet Alexander Pushkin onced lived time. The Arbat is a great artsy area on a pedestrian street, filled with artists and musicians, and very lively. Also located here is the Hard Rock café Moscow (where a dear friend of mine, Hal Blaine, has his drums on display). So we had to go and see them.

From the Arbat district we continued to Red Square. I could not believe I was standing where I was! I kept saying: OMG look where we are! If you were standing in the middle of the square, you would look to one end to see the most amazing church, St Basil's, with its unbelievable onion domes and colorful painting. You just can’t take your eyes off of it. The story of St Basil's is that once the architect completed it, Ivan the Terrible had him blinded so he could never make a more beautiful building  than this (they didn’t call him the Terrible without reason). To oneside is Lenin’s tomb, and just behind that are the Kremlin walls. Across the street is GUM department store and the KGB headquarters. It was so beautiful.

We returned to the ship for an early dinner and went back out for an evening concert at the Tretyakov Gallery. We saw a very talented group of musicians perform traditional Russian folk music. They played the traditional instruments such as the balalaikas, domras and bayans. We enjoyed it thoroughly, the conductor invited some of our shipmates to join in and perform with the band, and we all just loved the performance. We returned to the ship tired and fully satisfied with our amazing day.

The next day we went to the Pushkin Museum, where you could view Impressionistic art. Afterwards, we walked back to the Arbat district, where we met a friend who lives here and had lunch and cocktails before we went out to explore the metro on our own. We traveled about 2 hours out of the city and visited a Czarina's Palace that was gorgeous!

Our last day in Moscow featured The Kremlin tour! The Kremlin was actually a walled city built as a fortification and surrounded by 18th century towers, cathedrals, palaces, museums, not to mention the government. We visited one of the cathedrals where we were serenaded by a choir while we viewed the most impressive artwork and icons in the cathedral. We also went into the famous Armory museum. The Armory was my favorite museum  (yes, even more so than the Hermitage in St Petersburg). Here you would view Russian and foreign arms, armor, battle-axes, helmets, muskets and sabers. Also the vestments of the Czars, priceless silks, velvets, and brocades encrusted with jewels and pearls.  We saw the coronation dresses for both Czarina Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, and the latter's wedding dress. (She was only 16 when she married and was a tiny little thing). You would never believe the thrones and crowns. There are only about 20 Faberge eggs in existence, and 9 of them are in the Armory. My favorite sight in the Armory was the carriages of the Czars and the Czarina’s, there was an entire room of them, all different, all fabulous, some with jeweled interiors some with diamond encrusted wheels! So detailed you just stand there in amazement. They were absolutely incredible!!!

Uniworld river cruise reviews from the enchanting Danube

Monday, December 19, 2011 by Pam Jacobs

pam jacobsDanube River cruise tours are popular, and we are just back from a fabulous one, cruising from Passau, Germany to Budapest Hungary. What a great trip! We sailed on Uniworld’s River Beatrice, and she is one beautiful ship! One of the finer river cruise ships, River Beatrice was inaugurated in 2009. However, it was so fresh and lovely, you would have thought it was yesterday when they brought her out for her debut.

The crew was so personable when we arrived a bit tired. Our Hotel Manager and Cruise Master were waiting for us with a glass of wine and a light snack as we boarded the ship. They introduced themselves and let us know that if there was anything they could do to make our vacation better they would. Well we didn’t have to ask them, but they truly did make our vacation wonderful. Anytime you had a question or needed something they were right there! We went on this river cruise with another couple, friends of ours from Arizona, Penny & Jimmy. They are really a hoot and great to travel with. The dinners were great and we enjoyed the free-flowing wine or beer with dinner nightly. This is yet another thing that our cruise agency loves about Uniworld river cruises.

Onboard the highlights included the local entertainment, from Austrians, Germans to Hungarians. They provided different styles of folk dancing and music, from classical to pop. The house entertainer was “Zoltan,” who was fun, had a good voice, and was very accommodating to the guests.

Another highlight for us was  was dining with the Captain one evening.  He was probably the most friendly and fun Captains I have run into after many years in the cruise business. We were treated like onboard royalty and did not want for anything. After a long day we hit the hay and slept; and we slept great! The beds were amazing and so comfy! I had no trouble sleeping the entire trip.

Passau, Germany is where many of the Danube river tours begin. It is an adorable town, considered one of Bavaria’s oldest cities. It avoided the bombinguniworld river cruises' river beatrice during World War II, so the old church is still there with the world largest pipe organ. We later enjoyed a concert there (included for river cruise guests). The town itself was just cuter than cute, with cobblestone streets and lots of beautiful pansies in flower boxes. Passau is one of the most adorable cities I have seen.

We headed down river to our next stop, Linz, which is an hour and a half north of Salzburg. It was pouring that day and I am sure we would have had a different view of Salzburg if it hadn’t rained so hard. Charming and sweet, but cold and raining. Salzburg is one of the best preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was very easy to get around the city. I did get a huge soft pretzel in the market -- yumo!!!

Our guide in Salzburg was not a big fan of the Sound of Music, but I am. Even so, there were several places during our visit where we could just see Julie Andrews followed by the Von Trapp children running thru the Mirabel Garten.

We set sail to Melk Abbey, It was lovely, with lots of beautiful art and a fabulous view over the small own below. It started out as a Roman post and was handed over to the Benedictine Monks in the 11th century. Melk is now a charming little cobblestone town. We went on the Durnstein that day, which I thought was even cuter, it is about 1 or 2 blocks long and we were able to walk to and from the ship into town. So adorable! We also enjoyed a wine tasting at Domain Wachau winery (included). I am not a huge fan of German/ Austrian wines as I prefer full-bodied reds, but we had a lot of fun. The cellars there were really cool. Love wineries!!!!

Now on to Vienna! Loved it there!!!! Uniworld is doing a great job on their included shore excursions. They have two choices and a slower walking group, so everyone is happy. We chose the Vienna as the Viennese do “choice tour”… Awesome! We did a short city tour in the bus and debarked for a fun walking tour. We went to a Vienna Coffee shop for coffee. Yum! And then on to to a sausage stand to sample the most delicious sausages ever. We trekked thru the Jewish Ghetto, where several of us were visibly moved after seeing the Holocaust monument there. After this we needed some wine, and went to a really cool wine bar before heading back to the ship via the underground. Wonderful alternative excursion!

In Budapest we did the city tour; you will love the Central Market, the Parliament and Castle Hill. We went to Hero’s Square and played around there for a while. We really enjoyed Budapest and would return there in a heartbeat.

All in all we had a wonderful time, loved Uniworld, loved our friends and I just love River cruises! This is the hottest way of cruising and I am finding so many more people loving it!

Ten things we can do to help save the oceans

luxury cruise ship, crystal symphonyLuxury cruises have become a popular vacation of choice for many good reasons. One of the joys of a cruise vacation at our cruise agency are the days spent at sea, and cruising between ports of call. Being at sea is a relaxing feeling and for those that take it in, provides nourishment for the soul. In some mysterious way, the sea calls to us.

The more we explore the planet by sea on board the best cruise ships, the more aware we should be about preserving the oceans.  There's much that's being written about the dangers ahead: depletion of fish, destruction of coral reefs, dangers of plastics and pollution. Unlike on land, where damage to the environment can be more visual and apparent, the oceans represent a far greater universe, with just as much if not more at stake. So here are ten things you can do to help protect the oceans from National Geographic.

What's the most romantic luxury cruise ship?

Thursday, December 8, 2011 by Dan Ilves
Cast your votes! But as we ponder this question, two luxury cruises come to mind for top consideration in this category.

windstar cruisesThe first is Windstar Cruises, which offers three unique, motorized sailing ships of a small and intimate size. Then there's the pampering service and exotic itineraries which make for ideal vacations for couples celebrating special occasions, or just a romantic getaway.

While Windstar had some financial troubles in recent years, and was sold, our cruise agency has stuck with the product and glad to see the new owners are investing in upgrading Windstar's three ships. Windstar has remained one of the top rated cruise lines with the likes of Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler and other publications, as well as with our clients.

The second is Paul Gauguin Tahiti cruises. While Tahiti and French Polynesia as apaul gauguin tahiti cruises cruise destination is hard to beat -- it is, after all, one of the more romantic places on the planet to begin with -- the service and ambience onboard the Paul Gauguin makes for a relaxed and romantic vacation that's hard to beat. It's one of the most relaxing cruises we've taken, and the cuisine and service onboard top rate.  It's a perfect week's vacation (though longer itineraries are also available.)

What's the fastest growing port of call for cruise ships?

Tuesday, December 6, 2011 by Dan Ilves
You won't find a koala as readily as on an Australia vacationOk, Caribbean cruise ports are oversubscribed to and the ships calling there getting larger and larger. Alaska has nothing new to offer in terms of ports of call, and while Alaska cruises are fabulous vacations, there's little that's changed in recent years. Europe cruises are always desirable at our cruise agency, and it's hard to beat some of the great itineraries. Especially Baltic cruises and the hottest trend: European river cruises.  (Keep in mind airfares to Europe are especially high next year, so best to book early. We're finding with the cost of airfare to Europe fromthe west coast, some of our clients are (finally) deciding to head East to Asia.)

But while more travelers are taking cruise vacations, and some ports are seeing an increase in visitors, there's hardly any that have seen a 43% increase in one year! So where's that?

Give up? or maybe our photo was a dead giveaway... The answer is Sydney, Australia.  In the upcoming cruise season, some 264 cruise ships will call on Sydney, a record number. Sydney is one of the more scenic harbors in which to sail into or out of, with Sydney's iconic Opera House and Bridge in view. And Australia has remained highly rated as one of the top destinations of choice for American travelers.

Fancy a cruise vacation to Australia? You can review our Australia and South Pacific cruises, and we'll make sure you don't miss out on the action.

7 reasons to consider a Holland America Line cruise vacation

Friday, December 2, 2011 by Dan Ilves

dining onboard holland america lineSo you're not ready to take the leap to a top luxury cruise line, and you're style and tastes maybe warrant something other than the mega-size mainstream cruise lines. Maybe you're looking for cruises for families because you're taking the kids along. Which cruise line to book? Sounds like a premium cruise line like Holland America Line may be your ticket.  Here's 7 reasons why -- and perhaps you'll have your own to add:

1. Holland America is one of the top rated cruise lines because it's ships are mid-size -- neither too large nor too small. That means they're not so large you feel lost onboard, and not too small you feel there's not enough to do or space to move around in.
2. Many of the large cruise lines with Caribbean cruises offer their own private island experience. Holland America's private island, Half Moon Cay, is rated one of the best, with its 700-acre lagoon, 15 beachfront air-conditioned cabanas, and variety of island excursions. (Did we mention the 15 beachfront air-conditioned cabanas?)
3. Holland America has some of the best itineraries among the larger cruise lines, including Alaska cruises and Canada & New England cruises. In 2012 Holland America will have seven ships in Alaska.
4. Among the nine awards Holland America received from Porthole magazine recently, one was for best shore excursions. For the best family cruise, Holland America is a good choice. For example, in Alaska the line operates exclusive excursions for children (sans parents) instead of just keeping them onboard, allowing parents and kids to both have their shoreside experiences tailored to their interests.
6. Holland's alternative dining venues on its newest ships, including Pinnacle, Asian-themed Tamarind and Canaletto, for Italian cuisine, offer a diverse and quality dining experience that supplements the fine dining experience in the main dining room.
7. Cooking is all the rage, and the hands-on Culinary Arts Center onboard makes for fun experiences while the ship is at sea.

For these and other reasons, Holland America Line is one of our top rated premium cruise lines, and a popular choice of customers using our cruise agency. What's your take?  Perhaps you'd like to submit your reasons to like Holland America cruises.

Shore Excursions on Cruises

Thursday, December 1, 2011 by Sha Dev

Part of the excitement about taking a cruise is visiting different ports, experiencing different cultures and cuisines. In St Thomas I took a beach break and island tour thru Princess Cruise line. We visited Megan’s Beach, which is absolutely gorgeous with its white sand beach. We also got a bird’s eye view of this beautiful island from its highest point. St. Thomas is the mecca for Duty Free shopping, and you can really find some great bargains. For those last-minutes shoppers, the pier in St. Thomas has lots of stores selling souvenirs. I highly recommend booking excursions in advance because they do sell out and there could be 3 cruise ships in port at the same time bringing 10,000 passengers ashore. Our cruise agency can also arrange customized shore excursions for those that prefer VIP treatment.

St. Maarten is a very small island that's half French and half Dutch. The ship arrives on the Dutch side of the island. As it was a cloudy day with the possibility of rain, I took an excursion with the cruise line as I did not want to venture on my own. There were three ships in port, and traffic was pretty bad. Well, it started raining shortly after we left for our tour. Soon our fun little tour bus started leaking! Our tour guide did all possible to get another bus, but unfortunately, with three large cruise ships in port, chances of a replacement was not possible. The best rule for Travelers: just take things all in stride and enjoy yourself.

At Turks & Caicos the ship docks at the pier and the beach is incredible. I found myself floating in the Caribbean and enjoying Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Grand Turk! One can also take a quick trolley tour of town, or you can just relax on the beach and get some last minute souvenirs.

Princess Cays is a great port of a beach day getaway. You can also rent a private little beach bungalow while the ship is in port and they have various souvenir stores that you can charge the purchase to your onboard account. If the ship's tours are not suited to you, your cruise travel agent can always arrange private tours for you.”

Onboard the beautiful Ruby Princess

Princess cruises luxury cruise shipI just sailed on Ruby Princess from Ft. Lauderdale, visiting St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Turks & Caicos and Princess Cays (their private island). I was pretty excited since this was my first Eastern Caribbean sailing with Princess Cruises. These days luxury cruise ships are getting bigger, and the ship carries approximately 3,000 happy passengers on her 7-day sailings each week. After a quick lunch, I set off to find my way around the ship and was impressed how easy it was to navigate her. This is a very beautiful ship with numerous loungers and bars on various decks. One of my favorite areas to hang was the Piazza. This is a great place for people watching, which I love to do. They had live music and entertainment in the evenings which made this area on the ship a gathering place for many families but never crowded.

For those looking for total seclusion, I would highly recommend The Sanctuary. This is an Adults-Only area that offers a swimming pool, a whirlpool and a spacious sundeck with lounge chairs. They serve light refreshments as well. There is a fee to use this facility, and it is well worth it. Another feature I enjoyed is the Movies under the Stars, at the outdoor theatre. Princess screened new releases and concerts on various nights. This was a hit among passengers in the evenings, when they provide you with a light blanket and popcorn (how cool is that) and you find a cozy place for your movie night. Always check your Princess Patter, since they may play the same movie twice.

If you are one of those who must stay connected, there is an Internet Café onboard. The connections may be a bit slow at sea, therefore your minutes can be used up pretty quickly. Princess also rents laptop at a nominal fee. There are two premium restaurants onboard, Sabatini’s and Crown Grill. Plan on taking your spouse or date for a special meal at one of these restaurants, and be sure to make advance reservations.

There is no shortage of entertainment on this ship. If you like to dance, there are four different hot spots to check out. Hey, for someone like me who is too shy to dance, I even hit the dance floor and had a blast!
